I was extremely sad to find out over the weekend that the always lovable Jorge Castro has decided to take a back seat in the Gnu/Linux world. I had a chance to meet him over the UDS-MTV and was very impressed by his genuine interest and willingness to “make the world a better place.” (c) It is very unfortunate that we have so many people out there who rather spill poison than use their energy to be constructive!

Hoje conversando com o KurtKraut pelo Ekiga, descobri por acidente que o pacote vim não vem instalado por padrão no Ubuntu Edgy!!! Pode isso? Por algum motivo, o vim foi subsituído pelo vim-common, que não possui (até onde pude comprovar) todos os recursos do vim “normal”. Então, para reparar este grave erro: sudo aptitude install vim Agora, para testar a colorização de sintaxe automática, por exemplo, digite no vim:

Depois que eu li o anuncio que uma imagem (vmware) do sistema operacional do One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) ja' estava disponivel, fiquei curioso pois ate' agora eu so' tinha visto o prototipo. Fiz o download da imagem (mais ou menos 180 MB) e esperei ate' a hora do almoco para poder brincar com ele. O processo de inicializacao foi bem rapido, mesmo rodando dentro do VMWare, e em alguns segundos eu ja' estava olhando para o desktop.

The very first thing I do with a new laptop installation of Gnu/Linux is to install Network Manager (sudo aptitude install network-manager-gnome). Eventhough I have met people who have claimed to hate it to death, I still consider it to be the best invention since the invention of sliced bread! However, something very peculiar happens if you install it after you’ve already used your laptop to access a.. uhh… access point: the little Network Manager applet won’t detect the wireless device!

This X-Mas will be the first time I’ll have to travel to be with my parents. I have always lived close to them, but now that I’ve moved to North Carolina, we have members of the family spread across the East Coast. One thing we started doing these last 5 years was to shift from a everyone-buys-everyone-a-gift kind of X-Mas (very expensive if you have a lot of relatives), to a buy-something-simple-but-not-more-than-X-amount.

A primeira coisa que eu adiciono àuma nova instalação de Gnu/Linux em um laptop, é o programa Network Manager (sudo aptitude install network-manager-gnome). Este programa foi a melhor invenção no mundo Gnu/Linux desde a invenção do pão fatiado! Com ele você não tem de memorizar nomes e senhas para pontos de acesso de redes sem fio. Mas uma coisa que eu notei foi que se você instalar o programa depois de já ter acessado um ponto de acesso, ele simplesmente não funciona!

Pronto! Finalmente consegui arrumar um pouco de tempo para escrever um pouco mais sobre a minha experiência durante o Ubuntu Developer Summit na California. O fato que eu fiquei 1 semana fora do meu novo trabalho dificultou o meu retorno, e acabei atolado até o pescoço de projetos pendentes. Mas vamos ao que interessa: Umas das maiores atraçoes, depois da apresentação do Beryl, foi a apresentação do One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) pelo Ivan Krstić.

Finalmente estou em casa depois de quase 10 dias de viagem e muitas reuniões! Os últimos dias foram super longos e cansativos, e as noites foram recheiadas de muita bagunça, cerveja, e jogos de Mao. Este jogo é a coisa mais estranha e secreta que eu já vi. As regras, se é que existem, são super bizarras, mas bem no estilo do filme “Fight Club”, quando perguntei sobre as mesmas àum dos jogadores, recebi a famosa sentença: “One does not speak of the rules of Mao!
