It is hard for me to believe that it has been 3 months already since I started this new chapter in my career! My days have been filled with so many new things that it may explain why it literally feels like it was only yesterday that I left rPath to join the CloudForms QE Team here at Red Hat!

Last October I celebrated a couple of milestones in my life:

5 years living in North Carolina;
2 years since I bought my first house;
11 years married to my wife;
5 years working for rPath;

Needless to say, each one of those milestones were very important to me as they mark important decision points in my life! Every single one of them changed my life for the better and I can’t help but feel blessed that I have so many things to look forward to at end of the year that remind me how lucky I have been!

It was around the end of 2006. Having spent most of my life living in the New Jersey - New York axis and close to my family, I bought a one-way ticket to RDU, packed my bag (yeah, one bag) and came down to North Carolina looking for a new job. Leaving my wife (who was expecting our second child) and young daughter while I went “job spelunking” wasn’t easy for me, but I was determined to quit the rat race once and for all!

It is with my Community Manager hat and as a Linux enthusiast that I bring you this post about the Foresight Linux distribution, literally born and brewed where I work and filled to the brim with the technology developed at rPath. However, this is not yet another article about yet another Linux distribution with arguments about how great it is compared to other popular ones out there. No siree Bob! In fact, if you are happy with the platform or distribution that you are running, then kudos to you! I will not bore you to tears comparing lists of packages, what kernel or why you should drop everything you’re doing and grab a copy of Foresight. No (32-bit)!!! No (64-bit)!!! For a while Foresight was indeed a trail blazer and if you wanted to get the latest and coolest applications or features for Linux, that’s where you’d go! But nowadays I feel that a lot of the popular distributions are pretty much shipping the same set of things plus or minus a feature here or there.

Announcing: Foresight based Django Developer Kit Appliance RC1

If you remember one of my last posts, I wanted to eventually migrate my Django Developer Kit Appliance to use Foresight Linux as the underlying operating system… and I am proud to announce that I have made huge strides toward this goal!

Thanks to the guidance of some fellow rPathians, I managed to get an almost ready for production Django 1.2.3 + PostgreSQL 8.4 + Python 2.6.2 and lots of Django modules and latest versions for Git, Mercurial, Bzr, and Subversion ready to be used!

Remember that the appliance comes with its own management system that can be accessed by pointing your browser to https://YOUR-APPLIANCE-IP:8003 and logging in as the admin user (the default password the first time you boot your appliance is password, but you will immediately be asked to change it during the 1-step setup wizard). From there you can also configure backups, updates, and manage system services.

Today I’m releasing my Django Developer Kit Appliance 1.2.2 due to the recent security release of Django 1.2.2. Other than a newer version of Django, you’ll also get newer versions of several packages already included by default in the appliance.

I have been working hard (time permitting, off course) on migrating the appliance to a slim Foresight Linux base in order to upgrade the underlying python from 2.4 to latest 2.6.x, plus other goodies such as a newer kernel and the very latest versions of your favorite versioning control systems! This will also mean that I won’t have to maintain several packages on different places and will be able to leverage of the work being done on Foresight!

Last night our Transifex installation turned 1 year old. I think with
101 users and 4012 submissions in 45 languages it has been quite a
step forward compared to the previous mailing list-based submission
system. For that I'd like to thank all the people involved, most
noticeably Jannis for the initial setup, the Transifex guys for help
and fixing bugs, Og for the appliance we've been running for the last
half year and of course the Translators with all their patience and
effort to make it a success.

Once you’ve installed it (or launched it if using the ESX, OVF or Amazon Machine Image), point your browser to the appliance’s IP address plus port 8003 (i.e. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8003, but this information will be displayed in the console too), login as admin with the default password of password and finish the wizard. You can then use the root password plugin to set the password of the root user to ssh into the box and start hacking.

Anyone who has ever added a project to BitBucket already knows what Mercurial is, but for those who have never heard about it, “it is a free, distributed source control managemt tool that can efficiently handle projects of any size and offers an easy and intuitive interface.” In other words, in the world of Distributed Version Control (Systems), or DVCS or short, Mercurial is the bee’s knees! This is not to say that I don’t like Git or Bzr, but when I have to recommend a revision control solution to someone who just needs to get the job done, I don’t think twice! In my humble opinion, Mercurial is by far the easiest and most intuitive of them all!

Announcing my first attempt at a generic Django Developer Kit, a CentOS (powered by rPath's conary) based software appliance with all you'd need to run a Django project.

Just wanted to update everyone who showed interest in the new release of GNOME Developer Kit I announced yesterday. Based on some preliminary statistics I collected in the (less than) last 24 hours, it seems that the VMware image type got the most download, followed closely by the installable ISO format. I guess that was due to VirtualBox being able to use *.vmdk files and some people opting for the free virtualization tool.

GNOME 2.30 Translations for the Faint of Heart

With the GNOME 2.30 release just around the corner, translators are feverishly working hard to get the desktop completely translated into a multitude of different languages! But unless you’re comfortable building the application you’re trying to translate on your own (or perhaps the entire desktop), you’re pretty much doing what I call “blind translations.”

TriZPUG, Fabric, epdb, oh my!

Yesterday I attended my first TriZPUG meeting to check out Kurt Grandis' talk on Fabric, “a Python library and command-line tool for streamlining the use of SSH for application deployment or systems administration tasks.”

It was pretty cool to see a bunch of guys who share the same interests take some time on a Thursday to hang out, drink beers, and chat about python, django, zope, and other stuff. After the original talk was over and some of the other lightening talks that succeeded it was over, a couple of things became very clear to me:

In case you’ve missed it, the Xfce project has been using their own installation of Transifex to manage their translations online! Translators can now visit http://translations.xfce.org and keep up with the action!

Ditching MySQL for PostgreSQL

In order to better follow what the Transifex guys are doing with their development and deployment of Transifex.net, I have finally made the switch from MySQL to PostgreSQL for the Transifex Appliance. Luckly I was able to corral diegobz during my lunch break and together we worked out the necessary changes to get things to work (and caught and fixed a minor issue along the way too!).

In the meantime, the appliance seems to be getting some nice and steady traffic, which I suspect will only increase, specially when a new version of Transifex hits the streets.

Had some time today during lunch to work on the Transifex Appliance and decided to play with the newly added feature of supporting subversion over https. So I launched thedevel EC2 instance on Amazon Web Service and proceeded to add PCMan File Manager so that I could translate it online. Before you ask, yes: I do have commit access to the project and could have checked out the code locally and done the work as I usually do, but that’s not fun! Besides, being the good citizen that I am, I felt like testing this new feature (remember: this is only available on tip!) and providing some feedback.

Just to follow up on one of my earlier messages to Twitter/Identi.ca today, here’s a little trivia for you:

"What do Moblin, Xfce, Fedora plus a few other projects have in common? They all use Transifex for their translations!"

There’s quite a few other projects out there already toying with Transifex to see if it fits their needs too, which goes to show that the word is getting out about the benefits of using it as a platform for managing translations. I, for one, am very excited to see all the hard work being poured into it coming to fruition! It definitely validates their vision and it definitely must feel really good to work for Indifex, the startup behind Transifex!

For those of you out there who are Foresight Linux users wondering when the next major software update will hit the stable branch, your wait is almost over! We’ve been feverishly making all the latest bits to play nice with each other so that we can also release newer ISO images of what will be Foresight 2.1.2. Some of the issues we’re facing right now are:

Issues with latest *goocanvas/pycairo mess [0][1][2];
Epiphany issues with latest WebKit in x86_64;
Exotic side effects of kernel changes that make audio CDs not easilly playable (not a Foresight exclusive issue);
Mono is somehow partly busted (part of gnome bindings) in x86_64
- hits latest banshee;
Getting Anaconda to play nicely with newer kernel drivers for some motherboards;

Some of the cool things we’re cooking in the development branch are: latest KDE, GNOME, Chromium/Firefox/Opera web browser, gst streamer bits, latest kernel, Banshee 1.5.1, F-Spot, and many, many more applications!

Some time around the middle of 2008 I was asked if I would be interested in joining the very young QA department for rPath. I had already been working as a software engineer for them since late 2006, spending a larger chunk of my time working on a single project and not being able to experiment with the cool technology we were developing outside of my project. Somehow the idea of doing QA felt very appealing to me as I would then be able to see, first hand, what type of products we were publishing, as well as experience what our customers and users were going through. I jumped on the opportunity and the rest is history.

It’s been a while since I last wrote anything on my blog so here are some interesting nuggets:

I’ve been house hunting for the last 3-4 months and I can honestly say that it is a very intense experience! There are so many things to learn and remember and so many different things to consider! Wouldn’t be nice if you knew right up front all the costs and fees involved in purchasing a house, the same way you know how much it costs to purchase a pair of sneakers (cost of sneakers plus sales tax)? Alas, the hard work has paid off and in about 3 weeks I’ll be a home owner for the first time!
Work has kept me very busy these last few months but thanks to some new goals and new hires, the future is looking pretty bright for rPath and I’m very excited to be a part of it all! I managed to hack on a proof of concept for a Django-based tool for our QA department which received a good deal of good feedback! I’ve also spent some time cleaning up our wiki and getting things ready for the new QA engineer who’s starting in a few weeks.
Foresight Linux, my distribution of choice for the last 3 years, has undergone a lot of updates and changes these last few weeks, including a new sub-project called “Boots”, a Fedora remix. Basically, “Boots is proposed to be as faithful as possible an import of the upstream binary platform packages, within the constraints of being repackaged for Conary using Conary best practices.” Also, as Foresight follows a rolling release model, I’m enjoying having latest Firefox, Chromium, kernel 2.6.30.x, Xorg 7.4, OpenOffice 3.1.1 only an update away. GNOME 2.28 is already in our development label and should be hitting the stable branch soon!
Speaking about GNOME, the Brazilian translation team went through a (much needed) last minute change in the coordination and the entire team rallied to deliver, once again, a completely translated desktop! Though the new coordinator lacks experience using git and managing a translation team, he makes up with a good attitude and humility.
Still talking about translations, I’ve been keeping the Transifex Appliance up to date on both development and stable fronts. Thanks to the power of having a system version controlled management modelÂ under my finger prints, maintaining and delivering the appliance in synchrony with the development and release schedule of the the Transifex project is child’s play!
I spent some time playing with Mallard and using it to implement a new User Guide for Foresight Linux! In the next few weeks I will also port Cheese to mallard so that they can also enjoy of this great documentation tool! Speaking of Cheese, I had the pleasure of lending a helping hand proofreading the tour page and was honored that Daniel Siegel asked my permission to use my daughter’s pictures to show off the new 2.28 features! Thanks dude! :)
When not going nuts over the many different inspections needed for purchasing a house, reviewing and committing translations, maintaining packages and software appliances or spending quality time with my family, I try to keep up with my new year’s resolution from last year of reading a book every day during my lunch break. I’ve read quite a few books this year, some times juggling more than one book at a time. Lately I’ve been finishing up “The Last of the Mohicans" and am gearing up to start reading Â "Emblem Divide”, a novel by my good friend Pete Savage. My curiosity got the best of me and I just had to read the first page! :) The best part of the book in my opinion is not as much as all the “easter eggs” he sprinkled here and there, but the reason why he wrote it! Last weekend the Indifex developers released the new version of Transifex, “anÂ open service allowing people toÂ collaboratively translate software, documentation and other types of projects.” Codenamed “Pyro" (all releases are named after a X-Men villains), Transifex 0.7 has a pretty lengthy list of new features and bug fixes to make any translator worth his/her salt cry with joy!

The one feature sure to turn people’s head is the ability to do their translations online using their Lotte Translation Editor. “Its main features are still under heavy development, but following the â€˜Release early, Release oftenâ€™ principle, weâ€™ve unleashed this lady out in the wild to get some feedback and improve”, says Dimitris Glezos,Â all time mountain climber and Indifex's head honcho.

Just wanted to re-enforce what Zhang said earlier today about the bleeding edge GNOME Developer’s Kit, now with extra sauce!

What is it? It is a continuous build of GNOME packages all bundled up into a distribution (in this case, Foresight Linux) and distributed in a few different formats, such as ISO and VMware.

"What’s so special about it", you ask? Is it the fact that different image types can be generated at will? Nah, generating images is children’s play, just ask the Suse Studio guys. What is special is the sauce used to not only allow the quick and painless releases but also managing it as if the entire system was under a version control. Did I say “as if”? I meant to say, “manage it under a version control”! If you want to try this succulent sauce, ask your favorite release and management provider for conary!

I’m back from GUADEC 2009 (a blog post dedicated to this will be posted soon, I promise) and am now trying to get caught up with everything that has happened at work and projects I follow. Manage to spend some time today to check what’s new with the Transifex project and am very impressed with the direction it is going.

What you see above is the new tool/feature being added for inline, online translation of projects, codenamed Lotte! In other words, project maintainers can allow translators to do their translations using the web as its editor! Off course you can still do uploads of translated files as before.

Dando continuidade ao post do Vladimir Melo, gostaria de compartilhar minha experiência usando o programa Dropbox.

Mesmo sendo um usuário do GNU/Linux por tanto tempo, foi somente 2 anos atrás que comecei a usá-lo o tempo todo. Como eu antes trabalhava como um desenvolvedor de .NET e Oracle durante o dia para o Departamento de Educação da cidade de New York, eu tinha um ambiente padrão de desenvolvedor instalado em meu sistema e nada mais. Isto significa que eu não podia instalar nenhum outro programa em meu sistema devido as políticas super atiquadas adotadas pela gerência. Para você ter uma idéia, eu não podia nem mesmo pesquisar por informações online e fui aconselhado a fazer tudo isso de casa e trazer o resultado no dia seguinte para o trabalho, mas isto é material para um outro post.

Servidor de músicas Bailout MT-Daapd

No finalzinho do ano passado eu passei alguns dias trabalhando para configurar um servidor de músicas bem simples para usar em casa. Como eu estou sempre fazendo algo maluco no meu desktop/laptop que eventualmente sempre me leva a re-instalar o meu sistema operacional, eu estou constantemente movendo meus arquivos de música entre computadores e discos externos. Quando você tem uma coleção de tamanho considerado, este exercício se torna um pé no saco. Foi por isso que tive a idéia de criar um servidor de músicas usando o mt-daapd como minha ferramente principal. O mt-daapd é tão fácil de usar que eu imediatamente comecei o meu projeto.

For the past few days I’ve been working on setting up a minimalistic music server for home. As I am always doing some crazy things to my desktop/laptop that eventually leads me to re-install my operating system, I find myself constantly moving music files between computers and external media. When you have a decent sized music library, this excercise starts to become a major pain. That’s how I came up with the idea of creating a media server using mt-daapd as my tool of choice. mt-daapd is so easy to use that I wasted no time and got started right away.

Built a MT-Daapd Linux appliance to share my music at home. Installed it in a machine with 1GB of RAM and am now as happy as I can be. The whole thing weighs in at 237MB (I’ve included vim, openssh, libogg plus a few other nuggets) and off course everything is managed by the awesome conary technology. I’ve also added ushare (upnp support) and am hoping to make it so that sharing videos and music can be all done via a web interface. I haven’t made the installable ISO or VMWare image available yet but will do it soon.
Speaking of other technologies, I’ve been playing with a MacBook these last 2 days and am generally happy with the experience. Everything just… works! What? No need to tweak configuration files? With the exception of the lack of a right-click button, so far I give it 2 thumbs up.
Since we’re talking about operating systems, I was really glad to see that Foresight Linux has been awarded the 2008 Ovatio Award as the Distribution of the Year, and honor that is shared with its other green cousin, openSUSE. I have been running Foresight for over 2 years now and I just cannot imagine any other distribution that would give me the same flexibility, stability and coolness combo. You want to see a distribution that knows how to be a first citizen in the upstream world? Come talk to me on #foresight on Freenode.
Speaking of being a good citizen with upstream projects, if you speak Brazilian Portuguese you’ll be glad to know that the GNOME, KDE, XFCE, and Openbox desktop environments are in excelente shape as far as the localization effort goes. The Brazilian translation team for Fedora has also done a great job at delivering a localized desktop with their latest release! Now, I don’t know where you get your translations but if it isn’t being pulled (without modifications) from upstream, good luck pal!
Finally, between the many hours I have put into work these days (ever wonder why I haven’t blogged much? now you know) I have managed to mess around with Django to scratch a need. If I were to describe what I think about this framework using as few words as possible, w00t and teh aw3s0m3 comes to mind! By the way, writing code with 2 other guys while discussing ideas over Skype? Great XP experience for those who cannot afford to travel!

Keep in mind that you’ll have to patch obconf by basically replacing ‘obrender-3.0’ and ‘obparser-3.0’ to ‘obrender-4.0’ and ‘obparser-4.0’ respectively in the configure.ac file.

Or you use a conary-based system, there is a version packaged directly from their git repository which you can install by running sudo conary update openbox=foresightlinux.rpath.org@fl:2-devel.

BarCamp Raleigh 2008

Building a GNU/Linux Appliance: Step 1

As some of you may know, I’ve been doing a great deal of testing for rBuilder Online, rPath’s online community service for all your GNU/Linux appliances needs. As a QA Enginner I have a chance to play with the most innovative technologies we create (and dare I say some of the coolest things in the system/package management world?) before it hits the general public.

It is because of this work and my recent super involvement with our products that I decided to create a videocast on how to create a virtual GNU/Linux appliance using rBuilder Online. My objective is to show just how easy it is to package your software and distribute it to as many different environments and architectures without having to do a lot of heavy lifting. This videocast is the first step toward this goal, recorded this morning with no script or preparation what so ever. Please be gentle. :)

I’m proud to announce the release of the Windmill Appliance! Built with the technology provided by rPath, it is currently available as a downloadable installable ISO as well as a VMWare image for you pleasure.

Now, just what is the windmill appliance for, you may ask? Glad you did… Windmill is an Open Source AJAX Web UI Testing framework. For the last couple of months I have relied heavily on this software to properly test the web UI of one of our products, and the results have been quite pleasant. Moreover, the interaction that I have developed with the core developers (I’m always lurking on #windmill at Freenode) has proved to be extremely beneficial from my point of view.

If you’re participating in the Google Highly Open Participation Contest and is involved with the translation process, or just want a sure way to test your translations with the latest GNOME, then go get your copy of the GNOME Developer Kit now!

You could then download the message catalog file for the application you want to translate (in my case I got the Brazilian Portuguese file for Empathy) to your language and use poEdit (already included) to work on your translation. You can also take advantage of translate-toolkit to really do some serious QA work!

First off, for those participating of the Google Highly Open Participation Contest, get your GNOME Developer Kit now! Download the VMWare image or the DVD and start hacking today! There will be continuous builds (the plan is to have them daily) so that you’ll always have the freshest GNOME code to play with. For the translators out there, I’ve recommended the inclusion of poEdit, intltool, translate-toolkit and gettext, all latest versions available. Feel free to let us know of any other application that could make your life easier.
To keep your GNOME Developer Kit up to date, take advantage of the awesome PackageKit or for those interested in the amazing Conary packaging and management system, run *sudo conary updateall*
Speaking of Conary, those who have ventured into the packaging world will be happy with the release of conary 1.2.10 and the new cvc explain command.

Foresight Linux KDE Edition: The start of the odyssey!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I decided to give KDE a chance on my home system. For the last 5 days I’ve been neck deep in KDE land, with some fairly minor trips to non-KDE applications when I can’t figure out how to get something done (more on the soon).

The first step was to download the brand spanking alpha ISO for Foresight Linux KDE Edition (x86 here and x86_64 here) and bring it home. I waited until everyone was asleep to backup my files and got ready for the long install… AND BOY WAS I DISAPPOINTED! The install, including formatting my 200GB hard drive took 4 MINUTES!

That is what the new version of Foresight Linux will offer with its new forthcoming version 2! I heard the news from Ken (Foresight’s leader and co-worker) last night and it has been confirmed by Elliot, our Anaconda tamer. Obviously your installation time may vary depending on your system, but I’m fairly sure they’ve used a standard PC for this. Another worthy mention is the addition of PackageKit as the graphical interface for our Conary package management system and we will definitely make a big splash with the addition of the Splashy boot splash! As always, you can expect the latest goodness from GNOME 2.20.1 and the latest versions of your favorite apps!

Milestones and Events

Quick post to mention a couple of personal milestones and events:

Today is my 1-year anniversary at rPath. It also marks 1 year since I stopped doing work with VB.NET/C# and PL/SQL and embarked in a brand new world of Python, and web-by programming… There is not a day that I don’t learn something new!
Sept. 29th marked 1 year since I left New Jersey for North Carolina! Besides the advantages of working with such a smart bunch (see above), I now get to spend quality time with my wife and two daughters. I get to see them grow and learn, and that is priceless!
October 16th will be my 7th wedding anniversary! Marrying Elizabeth was about the smartest thing I have ever done!
I will be attending this year’s FOSSCamp 2007, together with my friend Ken Vandine. Looking forward to seeing Jorge and Jono again!

Um post rapidinho para anunciar alguns milestones e eventos pessoais:

Hoje completo um ano trabalhando na rPath. TambÃ©m completa um ano que parei de trabalhar com VB.NET/C# e PL/SQL e embarquei em um mundo novinho de Python, e pragramaÃ§Ã£o com web… NÃ£o tem um dia que passa que nÃ£o aprendo algo novo!
Setembro 29 marcou 1 ano desde que saÃ de New Jersey e me mudei para North Carolina! AlÃ©m das vantagens de trabalhar com uma galera super esperta (mencionado acima), eu agora posso passar mais tempo com minha esposa e duas filhas. Agora eu posso acompanhÃ¡-las crescer e isso nÃ£o tem preÃ§o!

Adding Vinagre to Conary

Tonight during our TriLUG meeting, Ken packaged Vinagre for the first time using Conary, the distributed software management system for Linux distributions. It took him literally no more than 5 minutes to write up the recipe, cook (package) it, and send it to the repository.

Vinagre is a VNC client well integrated with GNOME , current being developed by Jonh Wendell. For those curious as to what the recipe for packaging it was, take a look:

Foi bem interessante ver um artigo mencionando Canonical e rPath (onde trabalho) no mesmo parÃ¡grafo, jÃ¡ que Ubuntu foi responsÃ¡vel pela minha entrada no mundo do software livre, e a rPath responsÃ¡vel por me permitir trabalhar (leia, ser pago) com software livre!

Como somos os pioneiros desta Ã¡rea de Linux appliances, fiquei surpreso que nÃ£o houve muita informaÃ§Ã£o fornecida sobre o que nÃ³s (rPath) fazemos, nem mesmo um link para o web site da compania.

It was interesting to see an article mentioning Canonical and rPath (where I work) in the same paragraph, since Ubuntu was responsible for my entrance into the open source world, and rPath is responsible for allowing me to work (i.e. get paid) with it!

Being the pioneers of the whole Linux appliances business, I was surprised that not much information was provided on what we (rPath) do, not even a link to the company’s web site.

APTonCD on Linux Format Magazine

I was pleasantly surprised to see (as far as I know) the very first article written about APTonCD on last month’s issue (issue 95) of Linux Format, my favorite Linux magazine!

Back in August (or was it September?) of last year I learned that Rafael “CypherBIOS” ProenÃƒÂ§a had started this project written in Python that promised to deliver “a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one or more CDs or DVDs (you choose the type of media) with all of the packages you’ve downloaded via APT-GET or APTITUDE, creating a removable repository that you can use on other computers.” Back then I was still tinkering with the idea of porting my BillReminder from C# to Python, just so that I could start learning the language. Rafael seemed eager to have someone else take a look at his code and generously offered me commit access to his SVN repository. My first task was to clean up the code, add some (much needed) comments, and split up the code into classes, as well as divide the glade files into more organizable modules. I then proceeded to recruit some more people to help out and was extremely lucky to have met Laudeci “Pretto” de Oliveira, a developer who was searching for a good reason to take a plunge into the open source development world! I must say that Laudeci was the missing piece of the puzzle, and even though several other developers left their contribution here and there, it was him who fueled up the project and shifted things into a higher gear! Shortly after I started my job at rPath and with the birth if my second daughter, my participation in the project went from developer/supporter to cheerleader! :)

BarCampRDU

So here I am at BarCampRDU, together with the rPath crew. Got to meet a few new faces and am now sitting through my first session about distributed version control with Bzr and Launchpad. So far it sounds very much like Mercurial, which is pretty cool!

Anyhow, hope to be able to blog some more later today.

Eu realmente comecei a usar o Vim em tempo integral quando comecei a trabalhar na rPath em outubro do ano passado. De vez em quando eu aprendo um truque novo e resolvi compartilhÃ¡-los aqui com vocÃªs, e ao mesmo tempo mantÃª-los em um lugar que eu possa sempre pesquisar (o famoso “matar 2 pÃ¡ssaros com uma pedrada sÃ³!”).

I really started using Vim full-time when I started working at rPath last October. Every now and then I learn a new trick and I figured I’d share them here, as well as make sure I can always search for them later (talk about killing 2 birds with a stone!).

The first one if is for those times you want to make a generic search and replace action on a file you’re working on. I learned a while back that if I were searching for Foo and wanted to replace it with Bar, the following command would do the trick:

That is, Missing In Action / Prisoner Of WORK! Here at rPath we work based on iteration periods that could vary between 4 - 6 weeks. During these periods, we are all assigned (or loaded as we say) several hours of issues to work on plus whatever may come up during the course of the iteration. Decided to tackle all my issues without any disturbance, I took the plunge and have completely immersed myself in lots of python, javascript, and you name it! My participation on IRC channels other that the ones used internally drop down to close to zero, and the same goes for emails and jabber! Needless to say, whatever free moment I had was spent with my family and watching Brazil win the Copa America! Occasionally, while flipping through a magazine or a book, I’d fire up the N800 and play with it for a while. In one of these occasions, I uploaded my own mock-up code for the Tasks application. As I already had it (Tasks) installed and since my code was written in Python, I figured it would just run in the N800.

Article about Conary

Had a really nice surprise waiting for me today at work in the form of an envelope covered with Brazilian postal stamps.

It was a gift from my friend Vladimir Melo, who saw an article written about the package management system Conary, product from the company I work for. There was also another article talking about the GNOME 2.18 release and the fact that it was completely translated to the Brazilian Portuguese language, thanks to the collaborative work of 16 people. Since I was one of them, it was nice to see our work being recognized like this.

Para quem ainda nÃ£o conhece o sistema de gerenciamento de pacotes Conary, uma forma de descrevÃª-lo seria comparÃ¡-lo com um sistema de controle de versÃµes e gerenciamento de pacotes. Isso quer dizer que vocÃª tem um controle sobre as modificaÃ§Ãµes do cÃ³digo no mesmo estilo do CVS ou SVN, e qualquer modificaÃ§Ã£o feita pelo mantenedor do cÃ³digo original Ã© implementado em seu pacote em fragmentos, equivalentes Ã s linhas que foram adicionadas ou modificadas.

It’s been a while since I last wrote about my pet project, BillReminder, a late and due bills notifier for the desktop. With the birth of my daughter Kate, and the projects I’m involved with at rPath, together with the translation of GNOME 2.18, there wasn’t much time left to do anything else. Fortunately, I had the great pleasure of adding one more developer to the project: Luiz Armesto.

After exchanging a few ideas on IRC about the direction I wanted to take the project, Luiz simply carrried on his shoulders the entire re-write process for our database layer, to support a flexible and dinamic architecture. And it didn’t really take too long for the results to show! As if that wasn’t enough, he took upon himself to write a new notification mechanism, detached from the main application (shown below).

JÃ¡ faz um bom tempo que nÃ£o escrevo nada sobre o meu programa para notificaÃ§Ã£o de contas, o BillReminder. Com o nascimento da minha filha Kate, e os novos projetos que apareceram no meu trabalho na rPath, e as traduÃ§Ãµes do GNOME 2.18, nÃ£o tinha sobrado muito tempo para fazer mais nada. Felizmente, tive a prazerosa inclusÃ£o de mais um desenvolvidor no BillReminder: Luiz Armesto.

Depois de trocar umas idÃ©ias pelo IRC sobre o rumo que eu queria levar o projeto, o Luiz simplesmente carregou em suas costas a grande responsabilidade de re-escrever o sistema de banco de dados, para suportar uma arquitetura mais flexivel e dinÃ¢mica. E o resultado nÃ£o demorou para aparecer. Como se nÃ£o fosse suficiente, ele decidiu trabalhar no sistema de notificaÃ§Ã£o, separado da aplicaÃ§Ã£o principal (que jÃ¡ pode ser visto abaixo).

Life 2.0

After a very brief night of sleep (about 3 hours), Elizabeth started having contractions, strong enough for us to drive to the hospital. At around 5:18 EST our second daughter Kate Maciel was born!

There were some post-partum complications and Elizabeth lost a lot of blood, but the doctors seem to have things under control now.

Nothing can prepare you for the roller coaster of emotions one goes through when witnessing the birth of your child. Little Yv is the most excited, and keeps asking me: “Daddy, when can we bring her home?”
