Work has caught up to me and I have been flooded with small projects here and there at work! I have received a great deal of feedback on how to Ubuntunize my TabletPC and will be reporting on my progress as soon as I get some time to breath. In the meantime, while I away for yet another meeting, I just want to thank Sven Herzberg for writing about HRE 2.

Nunca fiquei tão feliz em fazer um anúncio como agora! O pessoal do Gnome Foundation anunciou hoje o novo programa chamado Women’s Summer Outreach Program 2006. Isso seria o equivalente ao Summer of Code do Google, só que somente para mulheres! Por ter uma filha de quase 5 anos que já adora brincar com o Linux, o que mais quero é ver figuras femininas revolucionando o mundo de software livre. Não que elas já não estejam, mas acho que infelizmente, por um motivo ou outro, eu quase nunca escuto de nomes femininos influenciando a comunidade.

O que posso dizer, fou um fim de semana muito movimentado…  Antes de seguir o conselho do meu amigo Otávio sobre como compartilhar minha coleção de música digital em casa entre os muitos dispositivos que possuo, eu infelizmente copiava muitos gigabytes de arquivos *.oggs pela minha rede… Como eu não queria entupir meu TabletPC, eu decidi tentar o tal do avahi. â€Å"Avahi is a system which facilitates service discovery on a local network.

This was a very busy Sunday, with a lot of soccer on tv (or how we call it outside the U.S., football), a lot of beer, and B-B-Q, like a good brazilian should. ;) In between a lot of meat, beer, checking translations, participating on a podcast, and an unexpected visit from my in-laws, I somehow managed to “play” with my TabletPC and rotate the screen. The tip came via a comment on my previous post, and involves the addition of a simple line in the xorg.

What can I say, it was a busy weekend… ;) Prior to following my friend Otavio’s advice (pt_BR only) on how to properly share my private music library at home with the many devices I own, I sadly used to copy the many gigabytes of *.oggs across the network… Since I didn’t want to clog up my TabletPC, I decided to give avahi a try. O domingo foi super corrido, com muito jogo de futebol, regado àmuita cerveja (belga, é claro!) e churrasco, como todo brasileiro que se preze. Entre carne, cerveja, revisão de traduções, gravação de podcast, e visita inesperada dos sogros, consegui arrumar tempo para brincar com o TabletPC e girar a tela. A dica veio via um comentário no meu blog em inglês, e involve a inclusão de uma simples linha no arquivo xorg.

Com o novo lançamento do Ubuntu Dapper, foram muitas as pessoas que iniciaram no mundo linux sem saber como configurar seu sistema para a melhor experiência possível. Claro que a instalação padrão já possui a maioria das ferramentas e aplicativos que um usuário possivelmente vai precisar, mas existem certas tecnologias que, devido àlicenças um pouco mais restritivas (em relação àsua distribuição, etc), não são instaladas de forma automática.

With the release of Ubuntu Dapper, many were the new users who initiated the linux world without any knowledge of how to configure their systems for a complete nirvana experience. Sure the default instalation takes care of supplying the majority of tools and applications a “normal” home user would need “out of the box”, but there are certain technologies which, due to some licensing issues (mostly related to distribution, etc), are not installed automatically.

Como tinha prometido antes, aqui estão algums fotos do meu TabletPC rodando o Ubuntu Dapper. Eu consegui usar o teclado gráfico (do sub-menu Suporte de Tecnologias de Assistência) para “escrever” usando o stylus pen, mas foi muito estranho ter de â€Å"catarâ€Â? cada letrinha. Não preciso nem dizer que já o removi da inicialização do sistema.Também instalei o driver do Nvidia e tudo está redondinho… mas ainda não descobri como girar a disposição gráfica.

As promissed, here are some pictures of my TabletPC running Ubuntu Dapper. I have managed to use the graphical keyboard (from the Assistive Technology Support submenu) in order to “type” using the stylus pen, but it was “weird” having to “cherry pick” the letters. ;) Needless to say, I have removed it from the startup. I have installed Nvidia’s driver and everything is just peachy… haven’t figured out how to rotate the display yet though.
